If you ran aground, it's because your boat came into contact with the ground.
As is the case with the real-life sea, the coastline is never "straight" and you can see waves moving along the coast, if you get too close to the waves and the shoreline, there is no guarantee that your boat will get through, and you run the risk of grounding.
Approaching the coast as close as possible means taking a risk, and can be part of your race strategy. When preparing your route, be vigilant and take this risk into consideration.
